Super Bowl 2020 picks, predictions against spread: Why 49ers will beat Chiefs in Super Bowl 54

  • NFL Chiefs v 49ers 49ers Chiefs

The 49ers and Chiefs are headed toward a classic Super Bowl 54. Although the opening line has the Chiefs as slight favorites as the AFC "host" team in Miami next Sunday, Feb. 2 (6:30 p.m. ET, Fox), it's one of the closest NFL championship games to call, ever.

The 49ers, for now, are underdogs by between 1 and 1.5 points. That's despite the fact that they were 13-3 as the top seed in the tougher NFC and steamrolled both the Vikings and Packers in the playoffs. The Chiefs, meanwhile, had to erase early double-digit deficits against both the Texans and the Titans.

Here's breaking down the matchup and why to lean more on the 49ers being victorious.

Raheem Mostert's monster game against the Packers in the NFC championship (29 carries, 220 yards, 4 TDs) didn't come out of nowhere. He has been the 49ers' most reliable and explosive back during the second half of the season by necessity, with neither Tevin Coleman nor Matt Breida able to shake off injuries.

Former NFL star Arian Foster dunks on Florida's pandemic response

  • NFL Dolphins American Football

Former Texans and Dolphins running back Arian Foster sharply criticised Florida's pandemic response on Wednesday as the state's COVID-19 tally continued to rise at a staggering rate.

Foster used Twitter to call out Gov. Ron DeSantis for implementing a stay-at-home orde夜网论坛r after more than 6,000 people have become infected. Through a video highlight, Foster compared shutting things down now — after DeSantis refused to do so for weeks — to dunking in the final seconds of a basketball game while already down 50 points.

DeSantis has faced extreme pressure to limit movement in his state due to the pandemic, and his slow approach to the issue compared to other large states has prompted backlash .

The video Foster shared comes from the Nov. 15 meeting between Kansas and Monmouth. In the clip, Hawks player George Papas steals the ball and dunks on Kansas while trailing 110-55. He talked trash to the Jayhawks afterward, despite the lopsided score.

Listen to Tony Romo geeking out over Patrick Mahomes highlights: 'Look at the magic!'

  • NFL Chiefs v Patriots Chiefs Patriots American Football

Any time Patrick Mahomes plays on CBS and gets the "Romo Game" with Jim Nantz and Tony Romo on the call, it's worth tuning in. Well let's be honest: Watch Mahomes play whenever you can. It's incredible viewing. But Romo certainly makes it even better.

Since joining the CBS booth in 2017, Romo has become the best color commentator in football. He mixes an innate ability to predict plays and analyze the football game with humor and enthusiasm that draws the viewer in. That's never more on display than when the former Cowboys QB gets to announce a game with top-end quarterback play.

In Week 4 of the 2020 NFL season, Romo and Nantz will call the New England Patriots at the Kansas City Chiefs. It'll be without Cam Newton due to a positive COVID-19 test, and it's delayed a day due to follow-up testing. But you can still watch on CBS at 7:05 p.m. ET on Monday night. Before the Mahomes-Romo reunion, we took a look back at some of Romo's most entertaining calls of Mahomes doing extraordinary things.

49ers injury report: List of San Francisco players on IR near $80 million in contracts vs. Packers

  • NFL 49ers 49ers v Packers Packers American Football

The 49ers aren't quite paying their injured players as much as they're paying healthy ones, but it's a lot closer than San Francisco would like it to be.

Entering a Week 9 "Thursday Night Football" game against the Packers, the 49ers have about $80 million in cap hit tied up with players currently on Injured Reserve. The IR list has more hope in 2020 than in some seasons, because players on the list can come back after missing three weeks. Some of the players currently on IR for San Francisco will still return (in the case of Jordan Reed, maybe even in time to play the Packers), but in general, San Francisco's 4-4 start to the season can be attributed to having hugely important contracts on the sideline instead of playing.

MORE: Will the 49ers move on from Jimmy Garoppolo?

Jaguars draft picks 2021: Who did Jacksonville take? Full list of NFL Draft selections

  • NFL Jaguars American Football

The Jaguars are well-positioned to upgrade their team in the 2021 NFL Draft. They're armed with 10 picks overall including four selections that will come in the top 45, so they will be able to add some serious impact players to their roster.

Jacksonville owns the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, and it's basically set in stone that they will take Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence with that selection. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess as to what the team will do, as the team needs plenty of upgrades to get back to the form they demonstrated when they nearly went to the Super Bowl back in 2018.

Kevin Durant answers Jalen Rose prediction he'll leave OKC for Houston as free agent

  • NBA

Kevin Durant's contract doesn't expire until after the 2015-16 season, yet the discussion about his possible next destination have cropped up.

Ask Durant, like The Oklahoman did on Wednesday, and he'll tell you it's premature.

"Nah, I’m here for the Thunder (laughs)," Durant said. "I mean, that’s all I can say. I’m not thinking far down the line at all. It’s about today. Today we got better against the Chicago Bulls. I can’t tell the future. I can’t speak on that. That’s his opinion. I’m just going to keep playing for the Thunder. I love playing here."

Durant was responding to a proclamation from ESPN analyst Jalen Rose, who predicted the disbanding of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Speaking on an NBA preview with Bill Simmons, Rose said Durant will leave for the Houston Rockets to play with James Harden and Dwight Howard and Russell Westbrook will team with Kevin Love on the LA Lakers.

Rose is the first to comment on Durant's future, but the Thunder star knows he won't be the last. Durant told The Oklahoman he expects this to be an issue for the next three years. He wants them to know that he hasn't even considered a move yet.

"I mean, just let them know I’m not think夜网论坛ing that far down the line, I guess," Durant said. "I mean, I love my teammates. I love where I live. I love playing for this organization. So I’m just taking it a day at a time."

Knicks' Raymond Felton out 2-3 weeks, Shumpert day to day

NEW YORK — The New York Knicks say point guard Raymond Felton is expected to miss two to three weeks with a strained left hamstring.

Iman Shumpert, the other starting guard, is listed as day to day with a 夜网论坛bruised left knee.

Felton has been bothered by the hamstring for much of the season and the Knicks finally decided to shut him down Wednesday. He had an MRI exam Thursday to confirm the injury.

Shumpert was hurt during the Knicks' 83-78 victory over Chicago on Wednesday when he banged knees during a collision on the court.

Source: Lakers looking for picks for Jordan Hill, but Nets remain favorite

  • NBA

The Lakers continue to weigh their options when it comes to big man Jordan Hill, with the hope of moving his $3.5 million salary, further diminishing the team’s luxury tax bill. The Lakers have talked with several teams, including the Pelicans, Bobcats, Suns and Cavaliers, but the team that might wind up in the best position to land Hill remains the Nets, a source told Sporting News.

Brooklyn has a disabled player exception available following the season-ending foot injury suffered by center Brook Lopez. That would allow the Nets to absorb Hill’s salary without sending back salary to the Lakers. Following the deal that sent Steve Blake to the Warriors on Wednesday night, that would push the Lakers down close to the tax threshold, saving about $11 million.

As they have shopped Hill, though, a source said the Lakers hav夜网论坛e also been asking for a first-round draft pick in addition to salary relief. That complicates a potential deal to Brooklyn, which does not have a pick available to trade.

If the Lakers can’t get a first-rounder elsewhere, the source said, Hill should wind up with the Nets.
