Saints vs. Vikings final score: Minnesota pulls OT upset in New Orleans

  • NFL Saints v Vikings Saints Vikings

Quarterback Kirk Cousins took a big step toward erasing his reputation as an inadequate big-game player Sunday, leading the Vikings to a 26-20 overtime win over the Saints in the wild-card round.

Cousins made two huge passes in overtime — a 43-yard throw to wide receiver Adam Thielen to get down to the goal-line and a 4-yard fade to tight end Kyle Rudolph for the walk-off touchdown.

Those completions polished a 19-for-31, 242-yard day through the air. Running back Dalvin Cook scored twice on the ground, helping the Vikings advance to a divisional round matchup with the 49ers.

The Saints forced overtime with a last-second field goal, but that drive left many scratching their heads. Head coach Sean Payton used two timeouts on the previous two series, leaving New Orleans with one for the final possession of regulation.

He didn't use it, so even though Saints quarterback Drew Brees got them into field-goal range with ease, there was little hope of winning the game with a touchdown.

Tyrann Mathieu explains why he let up on potential big hit on Deshaun Watson

  • NFL Chiefs v Texans Chiefs Texans

Tyrann Mathieu has seen your criticism, but he doesn't agree.

The Chiefs safety was criticized by some for not laying into Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson during the team's playoff game Sunday. On the play, Mathieu was coming in hot on a safety blitz and had a clear line to the quarterback. But instead of hitting him, he could clearly be seen letting up.

MORE: Breaking down Jimmy Graham's first down controversy

The video doesn't show it, but the context of this play is very important. The score is 51-31 and the ball was snapped just ahead of the two-minute warning (2:02). Houston had no timeouts left. So even if Houston scores on that drive, all Kansas City needed was one more possession to drain the clock. In other words, the game was pretty much over.

So there wasn't any need for Mathieu to light up Watson in that situation, because it would have been completely unnecessary. And that's essentially what the safety said when he was made aware of the criticism.

Packers' Aaron Rodgers sees NFL mortality come into focus after NFC championship loss

  • NFL Packers 49ers American Football

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Aaron Rodgers stood three yards behind the line of scrimmage, hands on his hips, watching his Super Bowl ambitions turn to dust.

The 36-year-old quarterback had driven the Packers inside the 49ers' 30-yard line, hoping to make their 17-0 second-quarter deficit more manageable. But Rodgers couldn't handle a snap from center Corey Lindsey. He watched the ensuing fray from afar, then slowly walked off the field once it became clear San Francisco lineman DeForest Buckner had jumped on the loose ball.

Green Bay never got close after that moment, part of its 37-20 loss in the NFC championship game.

MORE: 49ers defense has little fear

The Packers want to believe they'll advance deep into the playoffs again next year. But Rodgers, once considered a lock for several Super Bowl appearances, is short on time. Preventable mistakes — a fumble and two interceptions — were particularly gutting for the signal-caller.

"It definitely hurts a little more than earlier in the career just because you realize how difficult it is to get to this spot," Rodgers said. "I don't have the same number of years ahead of me[......]

Christian McCaffrey talks Panthers' future with Matt Rhule, Joe Brady and Cam Newton

  • NFL Panthers American Football 夜网论坛

Christian McCaffrey is coming off the best season of his career, and he believes the changes in Carolina will lead to even more success in 2020 and beyond.

McCaffrey, who partnered with USAA and the Marine Corps Association and Foundation (MCA&F) to give an active military member two Super Bowl tickets on Jan. 22, will have a new coach in Matt Rhule and a new offensive coordinator in Joe Brady. McCaffrey is hoping that leads to improved results if quarterback Cam Newton returns in 2020.

McCaffrey led the NFL with 2,392 all-purpose yards in 2018, and he joined Roger Craig (1985) and Marshall Faulk (1999) as just the third player to total at least 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. The Panthers, however, are 23-25 in that stretch, and they replaced Ron Rivera, who was fired in early December, with Baylor coach Matt Rhule this offseason.

Super Bowl 2020 picks, predictions against spread: Why 49ers will beat Chiefs in Super Bowl 54

  • NFL Chiefs v 49ers 49ers Chiefs

The 49ers and Chiefs are headed toward a classic Super Bowl 54. Although the opening line has the Chiefs as slight favorites as the AFC "host" team in Miami next Sunday, Feb. 2 (6:30 p.m. ET, Fox), it's one of the closest NFL championship games to call, ever.

The 49ers, for now, are underdogs by between 1 and 1.5 points. That's despite the fact that they were 13-3 as the top seed in the tougher NFC and steamrolled both the Vikings and Packers in the playoffs. The Chiefs, meanwhile, had to erase early double-digit deficits against both the Texans and the Titans.

Here's breaking down the matchup and why to lean more on the 49ers being victorious.

How much do NFL players make for winning Super Bowl?

  • NFL Chiefs v 49ers 49ers Chiefs

As outlined in the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, players are paid a stipulated amount for playoff games regardless of their role. For example, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady pocketed $56,000 in last year's AFC championship game, just like teammate Matthew Slater did.

But Super Bowl winners do get double the bonus of Super Bowl losers, and while it might not be much to the highest-paid players on a team, claiming a championship can provide a significant bonus for a rookie on the NFL minimum salary.

MORE: How much are Super Bowl referees paid?

After Super Bowl 54 between the 49ers and Chiefs, members of the winning team each will be paid $124,000. Members of the losing team each will be paid $62,000.

Including the entire postseason run, members of the winning team each will make $211,000.

An interesting tidbit: Inactive and injured players also receive playoff bonuses in most cases. In the wild-card and divisional rounds, players at the time of the game on a team’s active roster, inactive list or injured reserve will be paid the full postseason bonuses.

After that, any player who has been on the active roster[......]

The Super Bowl is the most exciting annual sporting event in the United States — but for one fan, the excitement appeared to be a little too much.

UPDATE: The man has been identified as Declan Kelly, who is a consulting CEO with ties to Hillary and Bill Clinton.

Twitter had a lot to say about Kelly — including his likeness to Andrew Bernard from NBC's TV series "The Office," played by Ed Helms.

NFL Combine player didn't know he had 37 parking tickets until Raiders told him

  • NFL Raiders

The NFL Combine is highly publicized for its drills, but another important aspect is something the league doesn't show on TV: the player interviews.

Teams meet with the NFL hopefuls and ask them a series of questions ranging from silly to serious. Franchises will be investing millions of dollars in some of these players over the next four years, so they want to make sure they're drafting the right guys. During this process, teams do some deep dives into each player's past.
